Canary in the Coal Mine is a quest in Wasteland 3.

Background[ | ]

The Mechanic says the gangs hate each other, and Liberty is barely holding them together. If we can talk to the slaves in the slave pen by the gang compound without being noticed, they might tell us how to exploit that hatred and tear the coalition apart.

Walkthrough[ | ]

  • You need to reach the slave pens by Liberty's compound just by the exit to the Scar Collector mine. Talk to Whetstone to learn that Steel-Trap, the current leader, is responsible for the disappearance of Ironclad Cordite (by knocking him out, this cost Whetstone his eyes) and Dee Sharp, a beloved leader of the Scar Collectors. He will note that he heard a commotion the night Dee Sharp disappeared and recommend that you follow the trail outside the company store at the Scar Collector Mine.
  • Check the destroyed pile of limbs just outside the Company Store to find bullet casings and old blood forming a trail alongside remnants of the space station. Head north to find the entrance to the mine. Well, "mine": The old Soviet space station is mined by Scar Collectors. Dee is inside, which means you'll have to fight your way through ornery cyborgs. Eventually, you'll reach Dee and free her together with a group of other slaves. She's ready to take back control of the Company Store.
  • Meet her there. The Company Store is being run by a Steel-Trap stooge named Cutter Throat. If you get rid of her, Dee can take over and use it as a base of operations for unseating Steel-Trap. This is fairly simple and requires killing Cutter at her bar. Do not enter the bar and initiate combat first. Otherwise, you're in for more Bad Time.
  • Once you deal with Cutter, she will take the Company Store and broadcast her story to all the Scar Collectors. A cadre of her loyal supporters will begin helping her stage a coup against Steel-Trap, leaving Liberty without Scar Collector protection as they tear themselves apart.
