Computation Engine Synth is a character in Wasteland 3: Battle of Steeltown.

Background[ | ]

The computation engine synths were a coterie of seven synths, originally from Arizona where they served in the Cochise AI's army, where their will was overridden by the AI to fight in its army. Although some of them agreed with Cochise's conclusions that killing humans would lead to peace. After the AI's destruction, however, they concluded that war with humans was unwinnable and concluded Cochise must have been wrong. After the AI's destruction, they fled Arizona seeking a place where they could live in peace. They first reached the Department of Energy Site where they came into contact with Dos-Teh-Seh. The synths concluded that her scheme was foolish and refused to help. Travelling further south, they heard a message on a frequency that only a synth could access. This signal was created by Di, who was promising them sanctuary in Steeltown.

This "sanctuary" turned out to be shackling them to a neural network called the Computation engine, forcing them to perform the tasks necessary for Steeltown. They were unable to see or speak to other synths despite being in close proximity.

The synths kept their knowledge and memories on Abigail Markham's commands, believing that this abilities would make them better solve the problem the Computation Engine was designed for. Because of this, however, they were able to try and manipulate the computations they were creating in the hopes someone would come and investigate, similar to banging on a coffin one has become trapped inside.

These "bangings" caused collateral deaths, which they are not proud of, but believe the blame for them lies with Markham, who enslaved them, and Di, who created the engine. When Team November arrived, the synths were hopeful that the Rangers would help them. While the synths and Rangers were enemies before, Rangers are known to help the helpless, and the computation engine synths were quite helpless. Or, even if they wouldn't help, the Ranger's predisposition to chaos could allow the synths to escape.
