Hi there Sxerks, I hope you don't mind but I've been hard at work adding content to the wiki for Wasteland 3. I know the game is still in its Beta phase, so I created a template to reflect beta-specific content and I've been tagging every page I've made with it.
If there is anything I can do to better constrain to the wiki's style and format guides please let me know. It's been years since I did any wiki editing/writing, so still trying to adjust to the newer content management system they're using now
Why is this wiki so far behind, I've been trying to rapidly add things but its hard when the Antagonist of Wasteland 1/2 didn't even have a page, and neither do the gods militia, the mannerites, the Robinsons, mathias barely has one, we have a lot of work no wonder everyone goes the the gamepedia's wasteland 3 wiki (I'm not yelling at you I'm just sad to see a wiki in this state)
That's because Gamepedia copied all of this wikis content when it started up, and then got "official" status off of our content. Which lead to more people using that site.
Now Wikia owns Gamepedia and there was a discussion about merging the two.
The Fallout wiki (which was also copied at the same time) has since been archived(closed for editing) at Gamepedia and merged back into Wikia. So I'm not sure why anyone is still editing over there for Wastleland, as the expectation is that it would also be merged back into this wiki.
things have been werid at that wiki, i still see new pages show up, but that wiki is also starting to die, more so for them its that Wasteland isn't that popular, and there Url now saws wasteland 3 wiki, but they still get more traffic than us and have 4x the pages
Hello, I'm Linconl from the PT Fallout Wiki and I would like to know if you still working on here. I noticed that a lot of the visuals got broken on the wiki and I would also like to help improving articles/templates if needed. I'm still quite new to the wastelande series, but if you can point me to where work is needed in here I will like to help you out. ^^
Your infoboxes are without any theme. I think they had one but they no longer work?
Update: Could you check for me if the "Europa theme" is active on you Wiki features? I'm looking here and I think that what is happening is that your infoboxes ain't using the supposed "skin". I could import a similar visual from Fallout's wiki. It will be initially be looking like this but we can customize it foward. Sadly for that I will need admin privileges. I can't tell what level of admin rights I need here (cause I don't know much about it) but I will need to edit some MediaWiki files.
I'll look into the NAV menu, though I don't plan on adding Portals.
The infoboxes are a whole other issue...
I did just enable Europa.
This wiki originally had the fallout wikis css (everything labeled FO3) and templates copied over by an old admin, I never really liked how it looked and couldn't remove it without it breaking everything. So if there is a new way of doing things that is cleaner, that would be great. Also User:Ferretwings, a community member, was working on templates.
Portals are good to give access to the content of the game that is beeing looked at. Think this way: You are new in to Wasteland 2 and want to look into weapons, quests and locations but you never used a wiki before. By having a central page for all that tyou will have a easy way to access all of that. Although using the top menu, search bar or look for categories is a logic choice for someone familiar with fandom/wikis, this cannot be said for everybody. This could become a barrier to get into using this wiki for example, besides beeing a easy way to keep track of what needs to be done/revised in general. They don't need to be complex, they just need to list content that people may wanna see.
I know that you had this old Fallout 3 theme for your infoboxes (even some customization in order to keep it quinda unique) by verifying your Mediawiki:Common.css while trying to figure why it broke the way that it did. The Europa theme would be the sensible reason, although seems like you turned it on and off them. For general programming of Infoboxes as templates like Fallout wiki - for example - you would only need to edit the said page (ex:Infobox character), but, let's say you want to create a theme for Wasteland 4 on your Common.css... you would need to know how to code a little.
There is one thing that can be done: to create the CSS trying to make it as clear as possible in what to modify to change what is intended (like HEX color, images, font size, etc). Sadly this is the only way to make a infobox/template that look in any way complex and has an unique design. One thing that I notice is that the more pages and the prettier pages look, more people will trust your content to keep looking in to it. So this sounds sensible to me.
One thing that I would like to see for example would be: Infobox theme W1 (for using in Wasteland articles), Infobobox theme W2 (for using on Wasteland 2 articles) etc. This could help bringing life for your wiki when Wasteland 3 gets released.
After looking for a few hours on here I think that as far as I can see this is the stuff that would be good to fix/work on for now:
Portals for the games (if you choose to use them)
Creating the pages for content of the games (ex: Wasteland 2 weapons) instead of using category-only - pretty much the same reason for the portals.
Mediawiki on design
and theme maybe? I'm about to graduate as a Designer so if you want I got you.
For now (since I'll be creating some stuff from the 0 I'll be using some stuff from Fallout Wiki but later on changing to be more unique) I'll be creating the portals trying to keep the mediawiki pages as clean as possible, but if you don't like something just say. ^^
Some other stuff will be created and if I need help to with something I'll be asking you (I'll just let it almost finished before that in order to make it easier for you to help with).
For the visual like in-game boxes I'll be looking in to programming it instead of printing it for example, so it should look pretty much as original but with scalable size.
Check this out, animations/images from the original game can be exported from any image editing software to reach a bigger size without much distortion. This is from Ace article with export 1000% scale.
I think that we can further on expand image files from Wasteland without distortion to place on its articles.
If they are used in an infobox, they really shouldn't be more than 2-2.5 times larger than the originals. The scaled version didn't look bad to me. Plus the originals really should have image options between the original, the uprezed, and whatever the anniversary editions has.
Hello Sxerks, I've been meaning to clean up this wiki for a while and seeing that no one else seems to be very active, I hope you won't mind giving me admin powers, There are many useless redirects, duplicate images etc whom we can save a lot of space on.
I won't use my powers against any other user except for pure vandalism, so you don't need to worry. If you feel they have been misused, feel free to take them back anytime. You are the only active admin here, so I hope it is okay.
Hey Sxerks, it's Tagaziel, from the Official Wasteland Wiki over on Gamepedia. I'm dropping you a line since you're the current admin.
Since Curse and Fandom joined forces, there's no longer a need to compete, but we can discuss joining forces, like our hosts. I'm planning on making extensive updates to the Official Wiki, so we might as well discuss the idea of creating what everyone wants: The one, definitive guide to the Wasteland series. :)
That place should be here. I do not want to see my work to go to waste and replaced by Gamepedia articles. I have expanded information on many things in Wasteland 2, in many cases beyond what Gamepedia mentions. Also the interface here is cleaner.
I agree. Our policy is not to force mergers, but discuss them with the community and see what solution we can arrive at, so I figured I might as well reach out and ask first, rather than leave everyone hanging.
What's your take on it?
@MatthewOne: Any content would be merged, rather than deleted, so your work would not go to waste.
Fandom is more mobile friendly (which is apparently important now a days). It will be easier for new editors. I don't think I've heard Wikia state anything about what is going on with the forced twitch login on Gamepedia (which is the main reason I never logged back into my Minecraft account over there).
Looking back at the recent changes at Gamepedia, there haven't been a lot of edits in the last 90 days(other than the interaction template). Are there any active users?
I know there are no plans to shut either Wiki service down, but given that one single platform which results in a concentrated base of viewers/fans and consolidation of resources, I suspect it will inevitably.
I find Wikia's interface much more slick and cleaner, which is why I don't edit Gamepedia. And I don't like the forced Twitch login on Gamepedia. Of course on Wikia there are server pangs rarely, and also I don't like the visual editor. But that's minor annoyances.
Sorry for the late reply, the last couple of days were hard on me (kid's having an UTI, my main work PC had to be set up again with Windows, ergh, bad times all around). Ad rem:
1. Yeah, we're working on fixing the mobile site of things (my experience with mobile sites was the opposite, but I guess I'm just out of luck). At any rate, I will likely be redoing the skin in the run-up to WL3/Remastered.
2. I believe that the Twitch login will be removed eventually. You can get a more concrete answer from our Global Community Lead, MisterWoodhouse (both Fandom and Curse).
3. The site doesn't have a lot of editors now, for two reasons: WL2 is past its prime and I like to think I did a pretty good job of filling in every nook and cranny. At the present, the official wiki has about three to five times the traffic (based on just last week), twice the content articles, five hundred more files, updated Porter templates (loving called the Plague by my boss :P), and also incorporates articles from the Wasteland deconstruction wiki (I reached out and we merged; all in good time, as Wikispaces went belly up) and another private German wiki that includes some pretty nifty image functionality and scripts that replicate the behavior of the games animation system.
At any rate, I will be definitely upgrading and redoing the wiki as Remastered nears and to get it ready for WL3. There's no rush for a decision either way, though, as we're still working on it. I just wanted to reach out, so that nobody's blindsided. :)
Unless you're a developer who has access to Curse's source code, I doubt you can change much. I've been to other sites too and it isn't much better. Besides the ugly UI and Twitch login are quite annoying. If the experience becomes better, then I will think of migrating there. Others can decide what they want to do, but it will be inappropriate to merge with a large enough census.
Hey I noticed something odd. If you go to the Wasteland 2 Page, you will notice the Wasteland 2 Perks subcategory shows empty but in fact has 60 pages. Any idea why? Also the Wasteland 2 traits subcategory shows 7 pages when there only 5? As of this writing, the Main Page and the Wasteland 2 page show a total page count of 932 and the Wasteland page shows 990, which I believe is the accurate total count. I am certain the subcategory issue is the culprit. Not sure if I created the Perk Category page incorrectly or what happened?
Hey Sxerks. I know it been a long time since I was last around and I have been trying to fix some links and update some pages here and there. I am a Bureaucrat, but I don't recall if I used to be an Admin as well. If I was, may I have that privilege back, and if not can you contact me so we can make a couple fixes? Most notably, the ability to remove Beta templates from some of the Wasteland 2 pages so we don't need to make new ones without the templates.
Hmm good point. I only have the Director's installed, but I can Install the Original and check against it. The web seems to not make the distinction now that Director's is out so that is the best way to compare I guess.
Sxerks wrote: Might want to note items that are in the directors cut vs the original version.
So, based on my research, the only real differences as far as the wiki is concerned is that DC added the Perks and Quirks. I don't think the wiki would benefit with regard to the graphics upgrade, the additional soundbites or the fact that with Unity 5, the game is smaller. With all that said, I think I will leave the Perks page as it is but with the disclaimer that they are only available in DC instead of creating a DC Only page with just links to Perks and Quirks. Thoughts?
Hey great work on this wiki I like it, I have a few questions since I'm planning on visiting more often, first off how long has this wiki been going? I was just wondering. Secondly, thanks for posting the Ertan picture I am new to wiki formatting and couldn't get it right, does it have to have certain dimensions or is there a trick to fitting it in the designated box? That's something I'd like to know before I go and create more pages all with screwed up pictures.
It has been around since 2008, and the first large sum of work was when I joined it in 2009. I added most of the pictures quite a while ago, seeCategory:Wasteland_2_Portrait_Images. The dimensions are automatic, so you just need to add the name of the image like"Wl2 portrait ertan b.png" without the quotes. I assume you are using the visual editor, which gives a lot of extra options that aren't used, best to look at a character page that already exists and edit it or edit in source mode to see what is really being entered.
