A robot is a machine designed to carry out various functions according to its programming. They are distinct from synths in that they do not normally possess sentience or the capacity for independent or abstract thought. They are typically commanded by a central computer or synth and defer to whatever programmed routines they have. Robotics as a science has made phenomenal strides before the Great War, leading to the emergence of countless series of robotic servants, assistants, and warriors in the United States, Soviet Union, and other nations. These remain a potent tool for anyone who can reactivate them, and at least twice very nearly led to the extinction of the human race thanks to the Cochise AI.
