Recruits[1] are non-player characters who can join the player's Ranger party and face the wastelands together.
General rules[ | ]
- The player can recruit a total of 3 followers with a full-size Ranger squad, more if it is undermanned. The upper limit is 7 party members.
- All recruits have a chance to go rogue (ignore orders in combat), lowered by the Leadership skill.
- Companions may leave the party if the player takes certain actions. They generally object to attacking innocents or members of their faction.
- The player cannot modify the appearance of a recruit.
- The player can take three recruits of their choice with them to California.
- Dismissing companions in the Director's Cut will make them unavailable until the player can access the Ranger Citadel's interior.

Non-standard followers[ | ]
The Provost and the Night Terror will follow the player party after being encountered, but the player will have no control over them. They can not be dismissed, only killed. If the Provost dies in Arizona, he will be found alive behind a dumpster in California.
